on hiring speed

Wild.Codes is an AI hiring platform for engineering teams. Through it you hire senior engineers who build products on large language models, full time on our monthly subscription or onto your own payroll as a permanent hire. Our hiring engine uses the same technology: in the full search, AI writes the interview questions from your brief, AI and a human expert review the recorded answers, and a talent manager signs off the shortlist.

Browse talent

Two ways to hire an LLM developer

Both are full-time, and you pay nothing until an engineer starts.

Subscription

$6,400-$9,600 a month per engineer, all-in

The engineer works only on your product, at least 160 hours a month, on our contract. We handle payroll, contracts, compliance and PTO and stay in the engagement after the hire. No placement fee, lifetime replacement, and a paid first week you can end with one day's notice. First shortlist within 47 hours after you confirm the role.

Permanent hire

12% of annual salary, $2,000 minimum

The engineer joins your own payroll, directly or through your employer of record, and you keep your own interview process. The fee is paid on the start date. First vetted candidates within 5 workdays of the search starting, and one free replacement within 60 days.

How we check the level

In the full search, engineers take a timed video interview with questions written from your role brief and complete a scored written assessment. AI and a human expert review the results, and a talent manager signs off the shortlist.

How vetting works

What you see before your own interview

Each engineer on your shortlist comes with the recorded technical interview and its transcript, the scored assessment and the monthly rate, so you meet fewer people: on subscription, clients interviewed a median of 2 of our engineers per hire.

What the profile shows

What to ask a senior LLM developer

Use these in your own technical round. They cover retrieval, evaluation, agent control and prompt injection, with what a strong answer and a red flag look like for each.

Your RAG assistant answers confidently from the wrong document. How do you find out why?

A strong answerSplits the problem into retrieval and generation before changing anything. Logs the chunks that were retrieved, checks whether the right one was in the top results at all, and builds a small labelled set of questions to measure that. Looks at chunking, embeddings, hybrid keyword plus vector search and reranking before touching the prompt.

Red flagRewrites the prompt or switches to a larger model first, without knowing whether the right document was ever retrieved.

Product wants to move to a cheaper model. How would you know it did not make the feature worse?

A strong answerKeeps an evaluation set built from real, anonymised traffic with reference answers or grading rubrics, scores both models on it with task-specific checks, and calibrates any LLM-as-judge scoring against human labels. Compares cost and latency per request too, then ships behind a flag or in shadow mode before switching everyone.

Red flagTried a few examples by hand and they looked fine.

An agent that calls your internal tools sometimes loops or takes the wrong action. What do you change?

A strong answerTraces every step to see where it goes wrong, then limits the number of steps, tightens tool schemas and validates arguments in code. Makes tools idempotent, asks a person to approve anything destructive, and moves steps that need no judgment into plain code instead of the model.

Red flagAdds more instructions to the system prompt and gives the agent more tools.

A user pastes text into your chatbot asking it to ignore its instructions and show other customers' data. What protects you?

A strong answerExplains that no prompt wording reliably stops prompt injection. Enforces permissions in the tools and the data layer for the signed-in user, gives the model the least access it needs, treats retrieved documents and user text as untrusted, and keeps injection cases in the test suite.

Red flagRelies on a line in the system prompt telling the model to refuse.

What does an LLM developer do?

‍

An LLM developer builds product features on top of large language models, usually through a provider API or an open model the team hosts. The work is software engineering around the model: retrieval over your own data, agents that call your tools, prompt and evaluation suites, guardrails, and the cost and latency budget per request. Training a model from scratch is a different job, closer to machine learning engineering.

‍

LLM developer, ML engineer or AI engineer: which one do you need?

‍

Hire an LLM developer when the model already exists and the work is building a reliable product around it. Hire a machine learning engineer when you need models trained, tuned and served from your own data, such as ranking, forecasting or computer vision. "AI engineer" is the broad title that covers both. If the role mixes them, write down which half matters more, because it changes who you should interview.

‍

What skills should a senior LLM developer have?

‍

A senior LLM developer is first a strong backend engineer, usually in Python or TypeScript, who can ship and run a service in production. On top of that, look for hands-on work with hosted model APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google) or open-weight models, a retrieval stack with a vector index, an evaluation habit, tracing of model calls, and a clear view of security risks such as prompt injection and data leaks between users.

Tools you will often see, none of them required on their own:

  • Orchestration: LangChain, LangGraph, LlamaIndex, or plain code with the provider SDK.
  • Retrieval: pgvector, Pinecone, Qdrant, Weaviate or Elasticsearch, with hybrid search and rerankers.
  • Evaluation and tracing: offline eval sets, LLM-as-judge checked against human labels, LangSmith, Langfuse or OpenTelemetry-based tracing.
  • Open models: vLLM or SGLang for production serving, Ollama for local work, Hugging Face Transformers, quantised weights to cut cost.

A candidate who can say why they would skip a framework for a given task tells you more than a long list of them.

‍

What is a RAG developer, and when do you need one?

‍

A RAG developer builds retrieval-augmented generation: the system finds the relevant pieces of your documents or data and passes them to the model, so answers come from your sources instead of the model's memory. You need one when the product answers questions over a knowledge base, contracts, tickets or code. Most of the effort goes into ingestion, chunking, search quality and measuring answers, with comparatively little time on the prompt.

‍

What does an AI agent developer build?

‍

An AI agent developer builds systems where the model decides which step to take next and calls tools to take it: search, internal APIs, databases, code. Typical work includes support agents that act on a customer's account, internal assistants over company tools, and multi-step workflows such as document processing. The senior skill is control: step limits, typed tools, human approval for risky actions, and tracing to see what the agent did.

‍

Do you need a generative AI developer or a prompt engineer?

‍

For a product feature, hire a developer. Prompt writing is one part of generative AI work, and a feature also needs the code around the prompt: data access, structured outputs, retries, evaluation, monitoring and cost limits. A dedicated prompt engineer makes sense mainly for teams with a large volume of prompts and an evaluation setup already in place. For most teams we would start with one engineer who does both.

‍

Where do NLP, fine-tuning and deep learning fit in?

‍

NLP engineers build text classification, extraction, search and translation, and today many of those tasks run on LLMs instead of models trained per task. Fine-tuning helps a smaller model follow a fixed format, style or task at lower cost, and it needs a clean labelled dataset; it is a poor way to add facts, which is the job of retrieval. Designing or training models, including vision and speech models, belongs to machine learning engineers.

If your role is mostly fine-tuning or training, say so in the brief so the search looks for engineers with that experience. When training is most of the job, start from the machine learning engineers page instead.

‍

How do you hire an LLM developer through Wild.Codes?

‍

When you describe the role, you first see engineers from our ready pool who are free today and pre-selected for it, with a monthly rate on each. If none fits, confirm the role and the full search starts: our headhunter agent searches further, every engineer on the shortlist records a timed video interview with questions AI writes from your brief, AI and a human expert review it, and a talent manager signs off the shortlist.

On subscription, the first shortlist arrives within 47 hours after you confirm the role. For a permanent hire, the engine also searches the open market where the role is, and first vetted candidates arrive within 5 workdays of the search starting. In both cases you run your own interview before anyone starts. How the checks work: vetting process.

‍

Can an LLM developer join your team full time?

‍

Yes. On subscription the engineer works only on your product, at least 160 hours a month, inside your repositories and sprints, while we handle payroll, contracts, compliance and PTO. Rates run from $6,400 to $9,600 a month per engineer, all-in, with no placement fee. If you would rather employ the engineer yourself, a permanent hire costs 12% of annual salary, with a $2,000 minimum.

Questions about hiring LLM developers

What do LLM and generative AI developers cost on Wild.Codes?

On subscription, a senior engineer costs $6,400 to $9,600 a month, all-in, and each profile shows its own monthly rate. There is no placement fee. A permanent hire costs 12% of annual salary, with a $2,000 minimum, paid on the start date.

Do your LLM developers train models or build on existing ones?

The engineers we match for LLM roles build products on existing models: hosted APIs or open models your team runs, with retrieval, agents and evaluation around them. Some have fine-tuning experience too. If your role is mainly about training models on your own data, say so in the brief, because that search looks for machine learning engineers.

What can I check about an engineer's LLM projects before I interview them?

Each profile is built from the engineer's CV and lists the stack and the work done at each job, so you can see which LLM features they shipped and with which tools. On a full-search shortlist you also get the engineer's timed video interview for your role: the recording, the transcript and a scored written assessment.

Which models and frameworks do your LLM developers work with?

It varies by engineer, so put your stack in the role description: the provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or open models), the orchestration library if you use one, and your vector store. Profiles list the tools each engineer used at each job, so naming a specific tool in your brief helps narrow the shortlist.

Can I hire an LLM developer for a short prototype?

You can hire one for as long as the work needs, but always full time: subscription is at least 160 hours a month on your product. There is no minimum contract length, and after the first week you end the engagement with 15 days' notice. In the first week, one day's notice is enough.

Does an LLM developer need a machine learning background?

For most product work, strong backend engineering matters more than experience training models. The engineer should understand how models behave in production: context limits, token cost, embeddings, and why the same prompt can return different answers. A deeper machine learning background matters when the role includes fine-tuning, training or serving your own models.
