XML Resume Export refers to the process of converting a candidate's resume into XML (Extensible Markup Language) format, enabling machine-readable, structured data exchange across systems.
Full Definition
Unlike traditional resume formats like PDF or DOCX, which are designed for human readers, XML exports structure resume data into labeled fields that can be processed by applicant tracking systems (ATS), job boards, and recruiting software.
The export typically covers personal details, experience, education, skills, certifications and languages, each in its own XML tag (e.g., <experience>, <skill>, <education>), so the data can be parsed, indexed and searched.
XML resume export lets candidate data move between systems, for example from a job aggregator into an ATS, or into a CRM or HRIS. Structured resumes also make automated screening and filtering possible.

Europass XML
The European Commission publishes the Europass XML schema for the Europass CV, with documentation that defines each element, the code lists for values such as countries and languages, and the rules a valid file must follow.
The Europass CV editor used until 2020 saved a CV as a Europass XML file or as a PDF with the XML attached. The current Europass platform, launched in July 2020, imports CVs saved in either format. The format also records self-assessed language levels on the CEFR scale (A1 to C2), and the legacy Europass web services could convert it to HR-XML, JSON or Word.
If an import fails, check the schema version and whether the PDF still carries its XML attachment; re-saving the PDF in another tool can drop it.
